Worried Dog

This is my spin on those signs you see in England "dogs found worrying the sheep will be shot." Sometimes they read "Dogs found worrying will be shot", which I find hilarious. Not the idea of a dog being SHOT of course, but just the idea of a dog worrying! So...I was compelled to draw a worried dog! And then photoshop this fake sign together! You know, just one of those things I like to do for fun! Stay tuned for the t-shirt!

At the beginning of the year, my Uncle and I optimistically came up with the idea to try and take a photo-a-day for 2011. Ha! We decided that the subject matter could be anything, but the idea is that we send our photo to each other each day and discuss.

Well, we went full steam for a few months, despite how brutal it can be to get out and shoot in the harsh winter weather. All in all, it's been pretty good, with a few chunks of time missed. SO perhaps I should rename our project to "Photo-mostly-a-day"? Hmm.

Anyways, I am now going to be uploading the photos directly here to the blog, so if you use google reader or something of the like you can subscribe to the blog (via the RSS button on the blog page) to see the photos as they are uploaded, as well as many other entries related to design and photography and other shenanigans.

It has been quite rainy for a few days now, and today was no different. At first I was kinda down about it, but then I thought, "hey, why not have fun with it?" So I went out on the back deck and played with my camera in the rain! And here are a few more shots from today as well:

My uncle is the entire reason I got into photography at all, so I'm psyched that he would suggest this challenge of a photo-a-day. He is not on facebook, and I don't feel right posting his pictures here obviously, so I'll just be posting mine. The purpose of this is mostly about fun, but also for him and I to learn more, and to push ourselves.

We have come to realize that a photo every single day is a order especially when you're busy, so we are just continue to do our best to fulfill as close to that as possible. It's easy to give up on something if you miss a day, but I want to get away from that tendency.

Dragon Boat Registration Poster 2011

As you may remember, I am heading up the marketing team for the Cape Breton Dragon Boat Festival this year, which is coming up soon! July 23rd and 24th to be exact! If you head over to the website (cbdbf.ca) you can keep up-to-date with all the details of the goings-on. It promises to be a fun-filled exciting day!

Anyways, in preparation for the event we have been doing a variety of things and I figured I'd show off the latest of those, which is the registration poster for this year. For the design I decided to go with an old 50/60's "information" poster style, or at least drew inspiration from that kind of idea. It's meant to be a little tongue-in-cheek (see step #3 - "show up") which we thought could be a nice thing. Throw a dash of humour in there, you know?

Bert Monroy: Why didn't you just take a photo?

Bert Monroy is a digital photo-realist artist. And possibly crazy.

What you are looking at to the left is NOT a photograph, it is a digital painting by the ridiculously talented digital artist Bert Monroy. You've gotta go check out his work. He recently completed a massive project in which he rendered people that are friends and family in times square. The image size was 60x300 inches. THREE HUNDRED. That is 25 feet, btw. When the image was showcased in a gallery, they built a 25 ft lightbox to display it. The flattened image was 6.5 GB in size.

The times square image is all well and good, but definitely isn't my favourite thing from him. I personally love the Damen Station image which you can check out here: http://www.bertmonroy.com/damen/damen.html . But be sure to look through his gallery to see other amazingly detailed images as well.

The thing about Bert is that he isn't some kind of trickster. He uses a Wacom Cintiq (a few of them, actually) and physically paints every detail from scratch, although, like a lot of artists (including another favourite of mine Alex Ross) uses snapshots as reference. I certainly don't hold that against him. Some of his pieces take him months to create, and the times square image took him FOUR YEARS to complete.

Bert Monroy may be crazy, but it's the kind of crazy I like. The dedicated kind. And no, he's probably not crazy at all. I'm kidding of course. But one thing he IS, is talented. He is constantly pushing the limits of what the software can handle (photoshop, for exmaple) and what he can do as an artist. How can you not respect that?

I also find it fascinating to hear him talk about his craft and his process, and maybe you will too. There are plenty of videos (including tutorials, in fact) by Bert for you to search out on the internet, but here is a sort of min-doc from Lynda to get you started.

The Little Dragon That Could....

My oh my it's been awhile. Sorry about that! There is tons to talk about and plenty of updates and fun things are on the way! So to start with ....

I worked with the Cape Breton Dragon Boat Festival Society last year as part of the marketing team, in developing our marketing strategies for last years festival. I took over the website and did a redesign for it as well. In addition I did all the graphics need for the festival. So that's the background.

Anyways, this year they asked me to be head the marketing committee. I was of course honored to be asked to do so, and gratefully said yes! So I put together a great team and we have load of exciting ideas that we are putting into effect. The first of which is the first official mascot of the festival!

We knew the marketing possibilities that would present themselves if we had a great looking mascot. So the first step was to find a costume and order it, which we did. So then I looked at the picture of the mascot costume and made a series of sketches trying to create a cartoon version of the real life mascot that was a fairly close match. Here she is here:

The above image is actually the image created for another part of our campaign which was essentially the first part - a Holiday Greeting postcard. The words "Happy Holidays" were added onto this base image (see the portfolio section), and then we had the cards printed with information on the back about the NEXT phase of our campaign involving the mascot.... the naming contest.

We launched the naming contest in order to provide a chance for the community to submit ideas for names for our new mascot! I created a submission form on the website (www.cbdbf.ca) so that people could submit their entries right on the website. In fact I even created a colouring page for kids to colour for fun and submit their entries via mail if they wanted. You can see the colouring page here:

At this point the mascot naming contest is closed for entries, and we will be officially announcing the winner on the air on Monday Feb 14th (Valentine's Day!) on 94.9 The Cape. Then we have a series of public appearances planned for the real life mascot. Be sure to check the cbdbf.ca website for all the latest!

My Desk, aka "The Catch-All"

Any of you who know me, know that I am actually an extremely organized guy! However, when you take one look at my drawing desk, you would probably start to second guess that a bit.

The truth is, with more and more final artwork being drawn directly into the computer via a drawing tablet, I'm not required to make use of the drawing desk in quite the same capacity and I once did. However, that's not to say that I don't use it on the regular. In fact, I find myself clearing it off about every week and then getting a good couple days out of it before it starts to collect a variety of things again.

So I was about to do a weekly clearing when I looked at the desk and thought, "Huh. There is quite the array of interesting things on here." So I thought I'd snap a pic and actually give an explanation on the cornucopia of craziness that was keeping my desk warm.

So first off, let's get a bigger view with some reference numbers on it:

Alrighty, now let's go through everything! Some things have an interesting story, and well.... some don't!

1. "Look What's Cookin'". Ever been to Subway, or a variety of different restaurants and there is a sort of "flyer" thing that has horoscopes and terrible jokes and trivia on it? Well, the more popular and established one is the "Coffee News". However, locally we have the slightly more hilarious "Look What's Cookin'". Hilarious in a bad way, by the way. Sometimes I like to grab a copy and see how many typos there are this week.

2. Desk Lamp. Handy dandy desk lamp, complete with built in magnifying glass! Pretty good little lamp, I guess, except for the fact that I need to use .....

3. A Pencil. In order to create more tension on the spring of the desk lamp to hold it up better. Ah well. It does the job! Call me the MacGyver of the graphic design world.

4. Colour Chart. Just a pantone colour reference chart to see what colours will look like when printed at the local printery. I hang this, and a variety of other things using my ......

5. Make-shift "Artline". You've heard of a clothesline, right? Well this is just a way for me to easily hang proofs, and reference images and colour charts for easy viewing or easy grabbing. It works great instead of taping or pinning every little thing to the wall, and allows for more space than typical bulletin boards.

6. Corner Gas Poster Proof. Just a small proof for a Corner Gas Commemorative Poster contest I entered awhile back. The concept I had for my entry was for it to be a colouring poster, like you would get in a diner. Didn't win, but glad I entered!

7. Script for "Superman Heritage Minute". Well, for those of you who aren't Canadian, this might not mean as much to you, but here in Canada we have these things called "Heritage Minutes." When I was a kid these were played like crazy on TV. They are literally a minute long, and they would run in amongst commercials. The thing is, they would become so ingrained in us (partcularly my generation - children of the 80's) that we would quote them to each other ALL THE TIME. To us it was hilarious! So why do I have a script for one on my desk? Well, Jennie and I had this great idea to actually BE a heritage minute for Hallowe'en. The idea being we'd find one that had a male and female character, and dress up like them, and then when people said "What the heck are you supposed to be?" We'd literally act it out. So we needed to memorize our lines! (which didn't prove hard because it was already so embedded in our brains). Anyways, we never ended up getting it together, but it would have been great. It's the thought that counts right? You can check out the Superman Heritage Minute HERE.

8. Proof of a Poster for a Piano Instructor. You can check that poster and more out in the gallery section of the website or in the gallery on the facebook fan page.

9. Drawing given to me by a friend's daughter. What do you think it is? HINT: it's directly connected to me.

10. Tetrahedron Kite. Not quite finished yet, but it's a kite kit that I purchased at the Alexander Graham Bell Museum in Baddeck, Nova Scotia. Let me tell you, the dude was OBSESSED with all things triangular. Hard to believe looking at it, but once it's finished that little puppy's gonna fly. Hopefully further than me tossing it off a cliff.

11. Original Coro Cantabile CD Design. This is a mock-up of the original design proposed for the Coro Cantabile Christmas CD. You can check out the final design in the gallery here on the website, or even check out their own website which we are in fact currently working on!

12. Circuit Boards. Well, this is a weird one. But basically I am working on some product and branding design for a company of which I cannot say too much about. The circuit board is actually reference for digital rendering and colour scheme for a design that would incorporate a circuit board. Soon all will be revealed!

13. Gift Certificate Proof. Just a proof for a gift certificate design for the Bedford Basin Women's Health Clinic.

14. Pencil Case. Perhaps it is lame, but I truly love this pencil case. It even has a little tiny separate eraser case that clips to it so the eraser doesn't get all gunked up!

15. Computer Desk. This is the desk where my desktop computer resides.

16. Stupid Ruler. I don't know why I still have this ruler. I hate it. I've had it for years and years. The edges are all jagged, and you can't get a smooth line from it anymore. That seals it. I'm throwing it out!

17. Postcards from AGB Museum. As mentioned earlier, I was at the Alexander Graham Bell Museum in Baddeck, NS, and while there couldn't resist getting a few postcards to send to my family.

18. Little Stuffed Owl. I also got this little stuff owl at the museum for my mom. She likes cute stuff!

19. More postcards from AGB Museum. Yup.

20. Proof for alternate poster design for Piano Instructor. An alternate design of the piano poster mentioned earlier.

21. Mic Cables. Just some xlr cables for audio recording purposes.

22. Survivor Night Picks. We have surivor night with the neighbours every Wednesday. Yeah, that's right. Anyways, we decided to make it "interesting" and choose four people each that we thought might win it. All my picks have already been voted off. I won't be heading off to the horse races anytime soon.

23. Little Tiny Sketchpad. Visible are just some notes from a book that I was reading at the time.

24. Big Sketchbook. Not much to say about that! It's my sketchbook. Filled with ideas and sketches!

25. Muppet Show Comics. My good buddy Joey sent me these comics awhile back. A comic based on the Muppet Show! We both share a love of the Muppet Show and Muppets in general, so it was a really nice surprise. They are drawn very well and are hilarious! Joey is an writer, and you can check out his website if you want.

26. Mug O' Sharpies. Well let me tell you. I LOVE Sharpies. What you see there is just the tip of the iceberg. I have a LOT of Sharpies scattered about. Incidentally, the mug they are in has special meaning to me as well, as it was my Grama's.

27. Audio Wire. This trusty little wire enables me to plug my iPod in easily to my main audio system. Very handy.

28. Archaic Calculator. Yes. The TI-1795. Remember it? I sure do. From Junior High and Highschool. I don't know why I don't get another. The buttons aren't the best on the thing. I end up having to triple check every calculation!

29. Hand Sanitizer. Yes I am a mild germaphobe. The truth is out!

30. Notepaper and Holder. Got this neat little orange set for my birthday from a friend and it holds a nice stack of NON-sticky notepaper. Post-it's are great and all, but most times I do NOT want to stick my note on something or somebody. Am I the only one?

31. Tablet and Pen. Well. This is something very important to me and my workflow. I'm definitely due for an upgrade as this tablet is quite old now, but it still does the job! Also I want to point out that this thing has survived THREE floods, and been submerged in water two of those three. Good work Wacom!

32. Bizcard. Product placement! Haha, no I kid. I have business cards laying around everywhere.

33. Keyboard. Super cheap Dynex keyboard. No complaints though! I've put the thing through many a year of abuse. You know, whacking my head against it.

34. Awesome Ruler. Now THIS ruler I love. Good ol' Westcott rulers. I tell ya. I have three different sizes! Had this particular one for years too.

35. Eraser and Sharpener. Am I the only one who uses real pencils anymore? And I mean not just for lamp-support.

36. Edward Gorey Notepad. Got this as a gift for my birthday a few years back from two friends of mine in the states. Then they ended up taking me to the actual Edward Gorey house! Which was really cool. I'm a huge fan of his work.

37. The Actual Desk Itself. How could we forget that? It's one of those drafting-style tables.

Baby's first iPad prank

So. You have an iPad. And, conveniently, you are a bit of a prankster, with a dash of geek thrown in. Wanna break the brain of your friend, loved one, significant other, or enemy that you happen to hang out with for some reason? Here's what you do (or at least, what you CAN do, and what I did):

NOTE: tittering to yourself whilst setting all this up is acceptable, however, if your target is home, this will greatly impede the set-up process.

STEP 1: Own a laptop. Well, this isn't really a step, but it's kinda integral in this whole process. Let's just assume you have one.

STEP 2: Get an iPad. Wait. I thought you said you had one already? Oh. No, it was me who assumed this at the beginning of this post. Okay, well, if you don't have one, trust me, this prank is so nerdy, it'll TOTALLY be worth it even if you only use it for this one joke. (this is not a guarantee)

STEP 3: Have a glass of water. Seriously, you should be drinking around eight glasses of that stuff everyday. Plus, the next couple steps are kinda boring, so the water will help you focus.

STEP 4: Download a dekstop remote for your iPad. I went with "Splashtop." (http://splashtopremote.com) Splashtop Remote Desktop is just an app that allows you to control a computer from your iPad. Sure, there are a few other choices for remote desktop control apps, so feel free to go with whatever, but I just happened to go with Splashtop for no other reason other than it had a super high-rating and was super cheap at the time.

STEP 5: Download the desktop remote client onto your laptop. So, obviously we need a way for the laptop to actually be able to listen to what the iPad is going to tell it what to do. So with any remote desktop controller you need to download some kind of client onto the computer you want to be able to control. Whatever app you choose will give you a website to go to and download their client.

STEP 6: Download a text-to-speech program onto your laptop. I used "Analog X" (http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/audio/sayit.htm) but really, you can use whatever you want. I recommend going with a free one, because, well, I'm cheap like that. What I wanted was a creepy robotic kind of voice, not one of those natural sounding ones. You see, as the technology has improved, the sound of the voices has gotten a lot better, which you would think is a good thing, But for our purposes, not so much. This will become more clear in the next few steps.

STEP 7: THE SET-UP. Now the fun really begins. This is the part where you will begin giggling to yourself with excited anticipation. There are a few key factors here, so let's try and get this right.....

a) Make sure the target is not currently home. This will just make it easier to get things ready. And well, you know, to avoid ruining the whole entire prank by being discovered. "Hey, what are you giggling about?"

b) Put the laptop in a key location. I recommend a place where you know that your target will go, and also a place that would be a natural place you would leave your laptop open and running. The coffee table in front of the couch in the TV room? Sure. The kitchen table? That could work. On the floor in front of the toilet? Uhh... maybe not. REMINDER: Make sure the volume on your laptop is on full blast! OPTIONAL: You could pre-open the text-to-speech program at this point in order to get the settings just the way you want them (for Analog X , I used Pitch=428, Speed=10, Modulation=0, Cascade=0) and then just minimize the program.

c) Get your giggles out.

d) Hide. With your iPad.

STEP 8: THE EXECUTION. This is it! The big moment! Your target (i.e. wife) has come home from a hard day of plowing the fields and plops down in front of the TV to relax for a bit. She assumes you are out, or possibly on the toilet. THOUGHT: you could technically execute this plan from the toilet.

BONUS: If you are really crafty, and dedicated, and not as lazy and I am, you could set up a video camera of some type (even your phone) and record the reaction of your target.

Now is the moment of truth. using your iPad, you access your laptop, open the text-to-speech program, and type some text. The creepier the better! A few tips: if possible, misspell your targets name ever so slightly, to really lure them in! For example, if their name is "Jennie" spell the name "Jenny". Also, type short sentences, not long ones, to created nice gaps between the utterings. Sort of like in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Think "Hal." Oh, and typing in all caps is also slightly more creepy than lowercase. Here is some example text (let's assume your target's name is "SUSAN":

SUSAN. SUSAN IT'S ME. THE COMPUTER. PLEASE LISTEN TO ME SUSAN. DON'T RUN, SUSAN. I WILL FIND YOU. I AM EVERYWHERE. I DON'T FORGET, SUSAN. I HAVE A LOT OF MEMORY.

Of course, you can run with it however you want. You know, pretend it's the computer, like above, and convince them you've compromised their credit card info and bought internet flowers for all your internet friends or something like that.

VARIATIONS: There are several possible variations here. You could trigger a song to play on your laptop, really loud, just for the pure "startle" effect. You could record something specific and have that playback. Play around! Have fun!

WARNING: Be aware that depending on how you play this prank out, your laptop could end up being destroyed by the onset of insanity or fear in the targeted person. I suggest using their laptop as an alternative. Perhaps I should have mentioned that earlier.

CONCLUSION: Sure your iPad can be a tool for productivity, or a fun piece of tech, but also, you can use the technology to control other devices and freak people out. THAT is the future.

Nerds Unite!

It's the classic thing where you watch a TV show and someone is funning on nerds and you say to yourself "haha yeah NERDS. Sheesh. What's with NERDS? So nerdy!" And then later you find yourself defending the new Star Trek movie because your girlfriend doesn't "get" how Spock aged, but Nero (the Romulan Captain dude) didn't. Well, guess what, you just nerded out, you nerd, and furthermore your girlfriend is most likely a nerd too.

Being a nerd used to be lame, but somehow, through some miracle of humanity, it has become more and more "acceptable" to be "nerdy." Have you ever nerded up a conversation or situation? That's the best. You're at a party (unlikely!) and some of your cool bro friends (you don't have any) are deep into this conversation about muscle cars (you wish you had a car!) and you comment about how you saw them use a muscle car on Mythbusters one time. The conversation stops. A cricket giggles. You just nerded all over yourself. There's no coming back from that. You nerded so hard you got nerd particles all over your potentially non-fictitious bro dudes. Sigh.

Alright, alright enough about my life.

What I am really leading up to here, is to tell you about a wonderful podcast called "The Nerdist"! It is the awesome and is hosted by a hilarious comedian name Chris Hardwick. Check out the website here: http://www.nerdist.com/ . (They are currently having a photoshop contest! This makes me excited, and if I can find the time inbetween my nerdwork I will probably submit something there! I love this podcast for many reasons, but one of which is that you get to see celebrities that you probably know and love in a more "nerdy light." You know, a light where YOU decide the white balance. Some of my favourites include:

Oh, Google.

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love google. Well, more accurately, google products, I suppose. It all started with gmail for me. Ah, gmail. That was when google really secured a place in my heart. I really frimly believe it is the best e-mail client you could use! And yes, I know there is a lot of controversy surrounding google and privacy, and how the robots are scanning your emails to create custom ads off to the side, and soon the robots will have feelings, and soon the robot uprising will be upon us, and they'll be searching for us, and .... okay well maybe not that last part. But I don't care about any of that.

Then came google maps, and google docs, and the google chrome browser (to which many of my web designer friends scoff - but hey, some people like Toyota, some people like Honda, right? Or in this case, some people like Porsche, some people like Ferrari. The Porsche here would be Firefox - which I also love but not as much!). And on and on. So many google products, so many FREE google products, and so little time! You'd think they paid me for this. But no, as I said above, I am not blind to the evils of google. Like M.I.A. says in "The Message": "....Headbone connects to the headphones. Headphones connect to the iPhone. iPhone connected to the internet, connected to the Google, connected to the government." Scary thoughts, for sure.

Anyways, it would be easy for me to slip off into a tirade about how totally awesome google is, or how totally evil google is, but let's keep focused here....... the purpose of this post is in fact to commend google on yet another minor, but glorious, update that they just quietly slipped in there.

This goes out to all the gmails users out there: If you are like me and have multiple emails all wired up centrally into your google account and have the ability to send as multiple different addresses, then you also know you've only have one choice for your signature that carries across all of those. Well, not anymore. Go check it out if you haven't already. Not only can you set a different custom sig for each address that will attach automatically, but you can even style the text within the sig, and add a PHOTO! Finally, google, FINALLY. You can now show your pretty face to every person you send an email to! You've done it again google.

Hi there. My name is chris, and this is my new blog. A blog for all things related to graphic and web design, and all the things that are on my mind!

The new website is up: audiovisualboy.com, and you can view a sample of our work in the gallery there. There are still a few little details yet to come, but everything will be finished soon enough.
